Order of St. Michael, founded in 1469, knight's... - Lot 115 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Order of St. Michael, founded in 1469, knight's cross in gold with eight points, the arms enamelled white with reserve chiselled green enamelled flames, centres in two parts representing the archangel Michael overcoming the demon openwork on a burnished background, chiselled acanthus leaves, fluted ring (tiny hair). Sewn to a black silk presentation scarf with puff, reduced by half. Attached the name frame to which it was attached. 54 x 48 mm, gross weight: 39.8 g France, circa 1821. The oldest order of chivalry in the kingdom of France, the order of Saint-Michel became second in rank after the foundation of the order of the Holy Spirit in 1578. Over the following centuries, it gradually became the supreme distinction for civil merit, rewarding in particular scientists and artists. It was no longer awarded after the fall of Charles X. Appointed Knight of the Order of Saint-Michel on 21 July 1821 by Louis XVIII, Jean-Baptiste Biot was officially received into the order on 29 September 1826 during the first chapter of the order since the Revolution. This historical chapter, convened by Charles X in order to give back its lustre to this prestigious but discreet order, gathered in Paris 56 knights appointed since 1790. Cf. Archives nationales, Maison du Roi, O/3/818, dossier 29 : BIOT, member of the Académie des Sciences. TTB to SUP
