Michel de MONTAIGNE. Essais. Paris, Les Livres... - Lot 161 - Pescheteau-Badin
Michel de MONTAIGNE. Essais. Paris, Les Livres de Louis Jou, 1934-1936. 3 volumes in-4, brown morocco, boards tapering towards the outside, decorated with a frame formed by a large listel of red morocco set with 3 gilt fillets, this listel rolling up on itself on the lateral sides and forming squares in the corners, spine with 5 nerves, gilt heads, cover and spine, case (Charles Benoit) Feuille, 76 / Monod, II-8311 /// I. (7f.)-LIV-(2f.)-327-(6f.) / II. (6f.)-453-(6f.) / III. (6f.)-321-(8f.). Very nice edition printed in red and black with the beautiful characters of Louis Jou. It contains 3 portraits in two tones, 2 full pages with coats of arms in colors and many woodcuts, lettering and caps by Louis Jou. This capital work had cost Louis Jou a lot of work, a lot of investment for the font and many difficulties because the paper had been blocked at the Spanish border for more than 6 months. Limited edition of 185 copies, this one of 125 on Guarro (n° 92), here enriched with an autograph letter addressed to one of the subscribers, Doctor Monceau, to whom he tells of his difficulties to complete the work and asks him for an advance of 900 francs to spend the month and a half that is missing. Beautiful copy bound by Charles Benoit. The spines have been re-stained.
