CLAUDE-ANTOINE THORY (1757-1827), an IMPORTANT PERSON IN FRENCH MASONRY AND ECOSSISM, was a member of numerous Lodges, Venerable of the Mère Loge Écossaise de Paris and an officer of the Grand Orient. He compiled extensive Masonic documentation and published several important works, including the present Annales originis Magni Galliarum O∴ (1812) , and the Acta Latomorum, or Chronology of the History of French and Foreign Freemasonry (1815). In civil life, he was a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, deputy mayor of the 1st arrondissement of Paris, and also distinguished himself as a naturalist, publishing works devoted to roses - in particular, he provided the text for Pierre-Joseph Redouté's great collection (Les Roses, 1817-1824) -, and gooseberries.
