Pierre Denys PUECH (1854-1942) The Mermaid Bronze... - Lot 175 - Pescheteau-Badin
Pierre Denys PUECH (1854-1942) The Mermaid Bronze proof with a medallion patina, titled in the centre, signed "D. Puech", signed "F. Barbedienne, Fondeur" on the terrace and bearing the mechanical reduction stamp of Achille Collas. Height : 79,5 cm. Height : 79,5 cm (Worn patina on the right cheek of the mermaid) Pierre Denys Puech, a sculptor from Aveyron, was a student of François Jouffroy, Alexandre Falguière and Henri Chapu. Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1884, he was a resident at the Villa Medici in 1885 before being promoted to director from 1921 to 1933. It was during his first stay at the Villa Medici that he created the sculpture "La Sirène". This theme, drawn from his own experience, remains the symbol of seduction and fatality. Exhibited at the 1890 Salon, he was awarded a First Class medal and the work was acquired by the State. Following its success, other examples were commissioned and published in bronze in collaboration with the founder Barbedienne associated with Achille Collas and his famous process of mechanical reduction. Thus, we find the work not only at the Musée d'Orsay (marble), at the Musée de Denys Puech in Rodez (plaster) but also at the Musée Ny de Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen (marble).
