Cross of the Compagnie de Porteurs de la... - Lot 389 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Cross of the Compagnie de Porteurs de la Châsse de Sainte-Geneviève, in silvered and partially gilded bronze, with full saltire ribbon. 89 x 87 mm France, mid 20th century. The Compagnie des Porteurs de la Châsse de Sainte-Geneviève was created in 1525 in order to allow the burghers of Paris to share the honour of carrying the relics of the patron saint of their city during processions. Although the original shrine, the work of Germain Pilon, was melted down at the Monnaie in 1793 and the relics of the saint burned in the Place de Grève, it was reconstituted in the 19th century with the help of relics kept in various churches. This company still exists. TTB to SUP
