JAPAN - EDO period (1603 - 1868) Three e-maki scrolls, ink, colors and gold on paper, Oshugosannenki, Chronicle of the last three years of Oshu, recounting the so-called Gosannen war between the province of Mutsu, led by Prince Minamoto no Yoshiie and the province of Dewa, headed by Kiyohara no Iehira. The term sannen, three years, refers to the length of the fighting that took place from 1083 to 1088. It is finally Minamoto no Yoshiie who wins, by besieging and making fall the castle of Kanazawa. Dated 10th month of Genroku 11 (1701) and 8th month of Anei 9 (1780) (Stains, small accidents). Dim. first scroll (approx.): 45,5 x 1849 cm Dim. second scroll (approx.): 45,5 x 1670 cm Size of the third scroll (approx.): 45,5 x 1620 cm The original e-maki was painted in 1171, and another version was made in 1347. The latter, which served as a model for the later scrolls, is kept in the National Museum in Tokyo and is considered an important cultural asset.
