Cabinet in carved ebony and blackened wood,... - Lot 90 - Pescheteau-Badin
Cabinet in carved ebony and blackened wood, the upper part opening to two drawers and two leaves decorated with Actaeon seducing Diana for the one and Vertumne seducing Pomona for the other, the inner sides with figures of warriors in the taste of Goltzius, containing twelve drawers with winged children and chimeras, with a sliding shelf and a window with figures of bacchantes discovering an interior in amaranth, rosewood, ebony and ivory marquetry of cubes without bottom and thirteen drawers hide side secret drawers; the base with a belt opening to two drawers resting on twisted columns and a lower tray (the columns and the lower tray redone at a later date probably in the 19th century). France, circa 1640-1650. H : 195 cm, W : 174 cm, D : 65 cm (Small accidents and restorations). This cabinet, whose main leaves illustrate the theme of love and seduction, belongs to a typology known as "with geometric frames", which corresponds chronologically to the oldest examples. However, our cabinet contains a certain number of sculpted elements in the frames, notably in the spandrels, which places it later in history than the very first simply molded examples. The omnipresence of the engraved decoration also places it quite early around 1640-1650.
