MONTELUPO Cylindrical majolica albarello... - Lot 10 - Pescheteau-Badin
MONTELUPO Cylindrical majolica albarello with polychrome decoration of a flower in a medallion surrounded by a garland of foliage surmounted by the inscription Pepe Lungo (piper lungum) in a band in a surround of foliage scrolls in the Gothic style. Early 16th century, circa 1500-1510. H. 25 cm. A small restored chip on the neck and a small hair on the neck. Former collection of Dr. Chompret. On the reverse, a label with the inscription Dr Chompret. This albarello is part of a set of pharmacy vases of which ten albarelli and one chevrette are listed today. All the pieces are decorated with a flower which seems to have been the emblem of the pharmacy. It has been suggested that it is a carnation or more recently the fruit of the pomegranate in its early stages of growth, see Linda Roth, J. Pierpont Morgan, Collector: European Decorative Arts from the Wadsworth Atheneum, 1987, no. 5 and Timothy Wilson¸ Maiolica, Italian Renaissance Ceramics in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2016; p. 45, note 1. In the latter catalog, the author lists the examples known (Wilson, op. cit., no. 19, p. 90). An albarello from this series went on sale at Christie's in London, May 29, 1990, lot 208; two others more recently went on sale in Florence (Pandolfini sale, October 27, 2014, lot 8). See Dr. Chompret's personal handwritten record with his observations on page 47.
