CASTELLI Rectangular majolica tile with polychrome decoration of a portrait of a man in profile bust in a medallion on a blue background topped by a frieze of chevrons. Workshop of Orazio Pompei. 16th century, circa 1530-1550. 30 x 15 cm. Chips. Former collection of Dr. Chompret. This tile is part of a set of tiles made for the ceiling of the church of San Donato, near Castelli. For a study of these tiles see the catalog of the exhibition Le Maioliche cinquecentesche di Castelli, Museum of Ceramics, Castelli, 1989. A tile decorated with a very similar portrait surmounted by the inscription Colas is kept in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin.
