Possibly workshop of the Masci family. Beginning of the 16th century. H. 23 cm. Cracks. Former collection of Dr. Chompret. An albarello of the same series was in Dr. Chompret's collection and reproduced, then attributed to Siena, in Répertoire de la majolique italienne, 1949, fig. 863, p. 110. Dr. Chompret also illustrated the copy in the old Pringsheim collection (fig. 862). Several large albarelli decorated with a Moor's head and the same monogram are dated 1501. They are in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Boymans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum in London. A dozen albarelli of the same dimensions as our albarello, as well as an undated chevrette, belong to a group slightly later than the series dated 1501. Six albarelli of this group were part of the old Pringsheim collection (Otto von Falke, Die Majolikasammlung Alfred Pringsheim in München. Leiden 1914-23, no. 113-115 and no. 322-325). One of them is now kept in the Musée National de la Céramique and reproduced by Jeanne Giacomotti, Les majoliques des Musées Nationaux, 1972, n° 416.
