MONTPELLIER Large covered earthenware pharmacy vase of baluster form with handles in the shape of a lion, the lid formed of a doctor in bust holding an open book bearing the inscription thesaurus medicinae, the vase decorated with the inscription theriaca.a in a band surrounded by fruit and foliage mascaron, the pedestal decorated with friezes of foliage. 17th century. H. 70 cm. Two chips in the open book, a small chip in the foot. A lid surmounted by a doctor's head, preserved by the Archaeological Society of Montpellier and two watch vases surmounted by the same head are reproduced in the catalog of the exhibition Montpellier, terre de faiences, 2012, pp. 361-362. The authors point out that it has been proposed to recognize Pierre Richer de Belleval, the founder of the Montpellier plant garden in 1593. A theriac pot preserved in the National Ceramic Museum is also surmounted by a man in bust holding a book (see the catalog of the exhibition Les pots de montre palais ducal, Nevers 2003, n° 81.)
