Kota reliquary guardian figure (Gabon) Powerful... - Lot 2 - Pescheteau-Badin
Kota reliquary guardian figure (Gabon) Powerful ancestor image (Mbulu Ngulu) that was once attached to a reliquary basket. The wooden core consists of a lozenge of fixation surmounted by a stylized face surmounted by a domed forehead and surrounded by stylized hair elements, traditionally covered with copper and brass plates. Note the rare band of small elements in relief at the top of the skull, the striated decoration treated in repoussé in the center of the upper crescent of the headdress, and on the reverse the rare stylized motif that occupies the entire height of the sculpture. The large iron clasps holding the metal plates are generally considered characteristic of the earliest pieces. In some respects, this work can be compared to those commonly attributed to the sculptor Semangoy from the Moanda region, who would have been active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Old parcel labels on the reverse. H. 56 cm Provenance : - Christie's Paris sale of June 11, 20212, lot 13 - Daniel Hourdé (Paris) - Acquired from Philippe Ratton on June 5, 2019
