Lwalwa mask (D.R. Congo) Rare in collections... - Lot 4 - Pescheteau-Badin
Lwalwa mask (D.R. Congo) Rare in collections due to the small population, Lwalwa masks are associated with representations of forest birds. Generally minimalist and geometric, the corpus is divided into four categories. This one, with its bushy nose under a prominent forehead, is characteristic of the so-called Shifola type and is thought to be masculine. A cord passed through the hole between the lips allowed the dancer to hold it to his face. Wood covered with red pigments, patina of use, small visible accidents. The remarkable plasticity of the Lwalwa masks was highlighted by William Rubin in his essay on Picasso in the catalog of the exhibition "Primitivism in XXth Century Art" Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1984, in association with the famous sculptures of portraits of women (Marie Thérèse Walter) from 1931-932. H. 29 cm Provenance: - Former Karel Timmermans collection, collected between 1962 and 1965. - Acquired from the Philippe Ratton Gallery on December 18, 2015
