Jean de LA FONTAINE. Fables nouvelles, et... - Lot 79 - Pescheteau-Badin
Jean de LA FONTAINE. Fables nouvelles, et autres poësies. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1671. In-12, tobacco calf, spine with five nicely decorated bands (Binding of the period). Le Petit, 235 / Tchemerzine, VI-384 /// (12f.)-184. Partly original edition containing eight new fables, illustrated with mid-page engravings, signed F.C. (François Chauveau), unpublished poems and the poem of "Adonis" which had already appeared in 1669, following the "Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon". The 8 fables are "The Lion, The Wolf and the Fox", "The Tick and the Fly", "The Treasure and the Two Men", "The Rat and the Oyster", "The Monkey and the Cat", "Of the Glean and the Pumpkin", "The Milano and the Nightingale" and "The Oyster and the Pleasers". This is the most varied and one of the most curious collections of La Fontaine, who reveals himself under the various aspects of the court poet, the fabulist, the friend of Fouquet in disgrace, and the great artist of "Adonis". A fine copy in a strictly contemporary binding. The volume is stamped VI on the spine, a peculiarity frequently encountered on this work, bibliophiles having often added this volume to the collective edition in 5 volumes which was published by Denis Thierry and Claude Barbin in 1678, 1679 and 1694.
