Jean de MEUN or MEUNG. The Dodechedron of... - Lot 93 - Pescheteau-Badin
Jean de MEUN or MEUNG. The Dodechedron of fortune. Book not less pleasant & recreational, than subtle & ingenious among all the games and pastimes of Fortune. Formerly composed by the late Mr. Ian de Meu, for King Charles the Fifth, & newly brought to light by F. G. L. (François Gruget). Paris, Estienne Groulleau, 1556. Small in-4, brown basane, spine with 5 ornate nerves (later binding). Brunet, III-1680 / Tchemerzine, VIII-253 /// (14f.)-143-1 pl. First edition given by François Gruget. This first edition is the rarest we have of this singular work. It was then reprinted under another title. The privilege was granted to Vincent Sertenas who shared the edition with Gilles Robinet and Estienne Groulleau. Erroneous collation given by Brunet which is rectified by Tchemerzine. The work is intended, by means of a twelve-sided die that one must obtain and questions and answers given in the volume, to predict the future and to answer your uncertainties. But François Gruget, in his presentation, remains cautious: Ie do not see all however to say that there is no certainty with the answers, to have to have faith there. For I believe that the intention of the author was never such, but only to give pleasure and recreation to those who want to be amused by it, & if beforehand some true response is found, it is not however necessary to draw it to consequence: because it is impossible that in the state of response some one does not come to mind. Without questioning the divinatory scope of the Dodechedron, we can only agree with the prudence of the opinion expressed here. Manuscript bookplate on the title. Binding slightly damaged, angular repair to the title, small wormholes on several leaves.
