Theodore Van-THULDEN. Errores Ulyssis adumbrati... - Lot 113 - Pescheteau-Badin
Theodore Van-THULDEN. Errores Ulyssis adumbrati a S. Martino ut in Regia Fontis-bellaquae spectantur. To Nicolao depicti ; and in as incisi to Theodoro Van-Tulden . Unà cum argumento, & interpretatione morali cuiuflibet fabulae. Paris, Tavernier 1634. In-folio in the Italian style, brown calf, modern four-ribbed spine (Binding of the time restored). Hoefer, XXXV-314 /// (6f.)-58 pl. Curious suite of 58 engraved plates retracing the adventures and travels of Odysseus. Theodore Van Thulden, a Flemish engraver and painter (1607-1676), was attached to the school of Rubens of whom he was a great admirer. He came to Paris in 1632 and executed a series of small paintings for the church of the Mathurins convent. He also published at the same time the series that we present here, which is copied from paintings executed in Fontainebleau by Nicolas dell' Abbate. These prints are precious, in that they preserve the memory of a gallery that was destroyed under Louis XV. The series of engravings is preceded by a title, a dedication leaf, a preface leaf, 2 leaves for the comments and the morality of each plate and a warning leaf. Old annotation to one endpaper. Binding restored, foxing, stains and a few tears repaired.
