MEISSEN Porcelain statuette representing a polar bear walking, the white coat enhanced with gray the end of the paws underlined in pale yellow. Model of Johann Joachim Kaendler. 18th century, circa 1745. H. 8 cm, L. 12 cm. Several bear models appear in Kaendler's works from 1741 on. Carl Albiker, Die Meissener Porzellantiere im 18. Jahrhundert, 1959, no. 172. A bear of the same model with two cubs with two cubs and bearing the inventory mark of the Japanese Palace are preserved in Dresden and reproduced by Ulrich Pietsch, Meißner Porzellanplastik von Gottlied Kirchner und Johann Joachim Kaendler, 2006, n°218-220, pp. 148-149 where the author suggests a dating around 1732-1733. Two bears, one of them of the same model but with a grey coat, were in the former collection of Sir Gawaine and Lady Baillie, Sotheby's, London, May 1, 2013, lot 164.
