Johann Wolfgang GOETHE. Faust, tragedy by... - Lot 18 - Pescheteau-Badin
Johann Wolfgang GOETHE. Faust, tragedy by M. de Goethe, translated into French by M. Albert Stapfer. Paris, Ch. Motte et Sautelet, 1828. In-folio, half caramel calf with corners, spine with 5 nerves nicely decorated with a cathedral décor of gilded fillets and fleurons and mosaic pieces of burgundy and ivy green calf, cover, slipcase (Devauchelle). Brivois, 173 / Carteret, III-270 / Skira, 59 / Vicaire, III-1013 /// (2f.)-IV-148 / margins 41.6 x 27.5 cm. Title adorned with a woodcut medallion by Porret and cover illustrated by Devéria. A frontispiece portrait and 17 out-of-text plates by Delacroix lithographed by Ch. Motte. A copy with the cover printed in dark buff, the portrait printed on Chine monté and the plates protected by bluish serpents. The printing is on a slightly strong laid paper. This is the first edition of the beautiful illustrations drawn by Delacroix and lithographed by Motte. Lithography was a highly innovative technique at the time, having been discovered by Senefelder in 1796 and introduced in France in 1818. The work is rightly considered the first painter's book. It is the oldest book listed by Skira in its Anthologie du livre illustré par les peintres et sculpteurs de l'école de Paris. A fine, well-established copy in an attractive pastiche binding by Devauchelle. It contains the very rare cover, which is still missing, as bookbinders at the time were in the habit of not preserving them. The copy has been carefully washed without excess. It retains the faint ghost of spotting and staining on a few rare leaves. The hinges are very slightly rubbed. Plates 4 and 11 are 1 cm shorter in the lateral margin.
