RELIGIOUS BOOK. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT. MISSEL. S.l., 1940. In-16, red jansenist chagrin, 5-rib spine, gilt head (Later binding). Attractive illuminated manuscript dated April 7, 1940 on one leaf. It contains 44 unencumbered leaves, including a frontispiece depicting the Virgin Mary carrying the Infant Jesus with altar and flower vases, a Petit Missel title with a chalice in a frame and 42 leaves of prayers written in black ink, mainly in Gothic script. The text leaves are contained within spaces ruled in black ink and are all decorated on the outside with colored and gold illuminations. These illuminations are mainly floral, red, blue, green, yellow, violet, mauve and gray, with scrolled stems, acanthus leaves and gold leaves. On 6 leaves, 4 dragons and 2 chalices enrich the margins. Finally, the text is adorned with 49 richly composed lettrines. The quality of this anonymous manuscript is remarkable. The execution is perfect, the fresh colors are impeccably applied and the gold perfectly enhances the compositions.
