Philippe Sylvestre DUFOUR or Jacob SPON.... - Lot 225 - Pescheteau-Badin
Philippe Sylvestre DUFOUR or Jacob SPON. De l'usage du caphé, du thé, et du chocolate. Lyon, Girin et Rivière, 1671. In-16, brown basane, spine with 4 ornate bands (period binding). Quérard I-1014 / Barbier IV-902 / Vicaire 294, 850 / Oberlé 731 /// (12f.)-188. Very rare first edition. The work is attributed by Barbier to Jacob Spon and by other bibliographers to Ph. Sylvestre Dufour, but as Oberlé points out, the definitive attribution of this volume to a specific author does not yet seem possible. It contains an attractive woodcut at the end of the dedicatory epistle. The text is divided into three parts: the part on coffee is said to be by a learned physician of the Empire who did not wish to be named, the part on tea is taken from the relations and observations of Mgr Beryte, Father Alexandre de Rodez and Nicolas Tulpius, and the last part on chocolate is a translation of the speech by Antonio Colmenero de Ledesma. Binding a little worn with numerous old restorations, small lateral loss to one leaf without affecting the text or illustration, stains and smudges not serious and small angular repair to the last 5 leaves.
