Vincennes-Sèvres Square soft-paste porcelain... - Lot 152 - Pescheteau-Badin
Vincennes-Sèvres Square soft-paste porcelain compotier with polychrome decoration of flowers in four reserves on a celestial blue background. Marked: LL interlaced, letter-date C for 1756. 18th century, 1756. L. 22 cm. Gold wear. This compotier may have been part of the celestial blue service delivered to Lazare Duvaux in the second half of 1756 (arch. MNS., Vy2 f° 13) and then sold by him to Lord Bolingbroke through Mme la veuve Lambert on September 20, 1756 (Louis Courajod, Livre-Journal de Lazare Duvaux, marchand bijoutier ordinaire du Roy, 1748-58, 1873, n°2590). The service included 48 plates and 12 compotiers at 120 livres each (four compotiers coquille, four compotiers à feuille de chou and four others carrés), as well as two fromagers and trays. Sixteen plates dated 1756 from this service are now in the English Royal Collection (Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue, French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 2009, pp. 566-569, no. 135). These plates are decorated with flowers in the center and birds on the rim against a celestial blue background. Also in the Royal Collection are four compotiers coquille, most probably from Lord Bolingbroke's service. They are dated 1755, decorated with flowers in the center surrounded by a garland of gold flowers and foliage very similar to those on the present compotier. In the same half-year of 1756, Lazare Duvaux also bought four other compotieres bleu céleste fleurs, but whose shape is not specified, for 120 livres each (Arch. MNS, Vy2, f°17) See D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th century, 2015, vol. II, n° 56-1, pp. 293-295.
