Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of Calvary
Crucifix in ivory carved in relief and openwork
H. 21 cm, set in an oval molded and gilded wooden frame on a burgundy-red velvet background Total height: 37.5 cm
Accident to the frame moldings, accident to the foliage at Christ's feet, arms of the cross missing
This crucifix depicting Mary Magdalene is indeed made from the ivory of today's Proboscideans, and more specifically Elephantidae. In fact, the parameters for recognizing Elephantidae ivory are clearly visible in the form of the guilloche patterns typical of this family. Chasing, sculpting and polishing have been carried out to modify the original appearance of the raw ivory material. A beautiful antique patina characterizes this ivory.
