Silver terrine and tureen. The terrine or soup tureen is oval with handles, standing on four feet with leafy attachments. The neck and lid are highlighted with gadroons on a bitter background. The handle is in the shape of a pomegranate on a leafy mound. The oval-shaped frame with fillets and contours, the wing decorated with channels on an amati background. PARIS 1779-1780 Master Goldsmith: Charles Louis Auguste SPRIMAN, received in 1775 Height: 25.5 cm Length at handles: 39 cm Frame length: 43 cm Weight: 3.670 kg (Slight deformation on the side of the frame and scratches from use on the frame and lid). Charles Louis Auguste SPRIMAN, silversmith in Mons and Paris, he obtained his master's degree in Paris in 1775. He worked for Robert Joseph Auguste and produced a number of shaped pieces, including a terrine (1755-1776) in the Musée du Louvre. Several of his pieces, like our terrine, are marked with the "poinçon de gratis" (a royal crown), a mark applied to pieces made for the court, ministers or as gifts commissioned by the king. The terrine (soup terrine, terrine soup tureen or vegetable terrine) is a large, covered, oval-shaped container on legs and a matching display stand, often used to serve meat dishes. Terrines such as pots à oille (circular in cross-section) were generally arranged in pairs.
