In-8, speckled brown basane, smooth cloisonné spine decorated with vegetal and geometrical motifs with red title page, gilded frieze of fillet and vegetal motifs framing the boards, ornate coupes, blue speckled edges (Dutch binding circa 1820). viii-319-(3 of which the first 2 are blank) pp. the errata leaf having been bound here after the text; one printed fold-out table out of text; binding rubbed with worn corners, handwritten label at head of spine, marginal tear not missing from title-frontispiece. RARE FIRST EDITION. Off-text lithographed illustration, 14 off-text plates including title-frontispiece, printed on azure paper. Provenance: Adam-Jean-Bernard de Roye van Wichen (1790-1863, handwritten bookplate on verso of flyleaf). An officer in the Dutch army, he took part in Napoleon's campaigns from 1807 to 1813, fighting notably in Russia. - Le Profond Silence Lodge, Kampen, Netherlands (ex-libris stamp on title).
