REPUBLIQUE BATAVE. - Wetboek voor de broederschap... - Lot 113 - Pescheteau-Badin
REPUBLIQUE BATAVE. - Wetboek voor de broederschap der Vry-Metselaaren, in de Bataafsche Republiek, en derzelver onderhoorige coloniën en landen [Code of the brotherhood of Freemasons, in the Batave Republic, and the colonies and territories dependent on it]. S.l.n.n., [1798]. In-4, green bradel boards, spine cloisonné with gilt geometric bands, gilt geometric frieze framing the boards with gilt fleurons in the center, gilt title at the top of the first board (period binding). (2 of which the second is blank)-11-(one)-49-(one blank) pp. ; interleaved copy. While the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the United Provinces and its Deputy Grand Master had Orange sympathies, the country's Freemasons in general, like the majority of the population, enthusiastically welcomed the "Velvet Revolution": the intervention of French troops led to the departure of Stathouder William V of Orange-Nassau, and the establishment of the Batave Republic, which was proclaimed in January 1795 and received a Constitution in April 1798. This political entity remained in existence until Louis Bonaparte created the Kingdom of Holland in 1806. The Lodges were banned in June 1798, but this ban was lifted in November of the same year with the Moderate coup d'état. Provenance: Grand Orient of the Netherlands (bookplate vignette).
