Gustave Adolphe MOSSA (1883-1979) - Lot 143
Gustave Adolphe MOSSA (1883-1979) Manfred and Astarte Watercolor and ink, stamped on the back from the G.A. Mossa collection 42.5 x 25.5 cm Provenance : - Sale Enghien-les-Bains, November 18, 1981 - Acquired by Mlle J. at the above-mentioned sale - By descent to the present owner/s Our watercolor is a preparatory study for an illustration of Manfred, Byron's dramatic poem published in 1817 and performed by Robert Schumann in 1848. The theme evokes Manfred, a reclusive lord in the Swiss Alps, who summons the supernatural powers to evoke Astarte, a female figure both loved and lost, whose memory haunts him. This watercolor depicts the moment of their meeting in the afterlife. Unlike the definitive version (cf. Soubiran, Catalogue raisonné, 2010, no. A258), the composition here remains more ethereal and open, and Manfred's face expresses amazement rather than despair.
