Femme aux deux colombes is said to have been a gift from de Feure to Albert Sarraut's wife, probably in gratitude for the favorable article Sarraut had published about him in L'Artiste, on the occasion of the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts in April 1895.
Ian Millman notes a resemblance between the woman shown here and the princess in De Feure's frontispiece for Marcel Schwob's La Porte des rêves.
