NEVERS - Lot 247
NEVERS Earthenware rim plate with patriotic polychrome decoration of Queen Marie-Antoinette's necklace. Underglaze mark in black Late 18th century. D. 23 cm Chips and chips. This is a stylized but very realistic representation of the famous necklace that the Cardinal de Rohan, fooled by a scheming Madame de la Motte, was supposed to have bought for the Queen; a colossal swindle that would be judged by the Paris Parliament in 1785, hostile to Marie Antoinette, which would clear the Cardinal, and the necklace affair would be the first signal of the Queen's misfortunes. The revolution was underway. In all likelihood, it was created when the case was referred to the Paris Parliament in 1785. In the CHAVAILLON sale of November 10, 2002, three examples were offered. Given its rarity, it seems that this design, which undermined royalty, was not as successful as had been hoped. This Queen's necklace design exists with yellow pearls only, or like this one with green and yellow pearls. Similar model Musée National de la Céramique, Sèvres.
