Strasbourg - Lot 59
Strasbourg Pair of covered terrines in the shape of a duck, the neck and head in green, the plumage in brown, purple, blue, green and pink on a green base. Manufacture of Paul Hannong. 18th century, circa 1750-1755. H. 27.5 cm and W. 34.5 cm for one and H. 28 cm and W. 34 cm for the other. A very small chip under the base of one. A large service in Strasbourg earthenware was delivered to Prince Elector Clemens August at the Clemenswerth castle in 1751, including a large number of terrines in the shape of zoomorphs or fruits, vegetables or flowers. An inventory drawn up in 1761 after Clemens August's death mentions pheasants, geese, ducks, pigeons, partridges, woodcocks, wild boar, turkey, capercaillie, turtle and cauliflower. A photograph of the Clemenswerth kitchens taken in the early 20th century shows four ducks of two different models. (Jacques Bastian, Strasbourg, faiences et porcelaines, 1721-1784, tome I, fig. n° 21, pp. 36-37) ` Other zoomorphic earthenware terrines by Paul Hannong were delivered to the Château de la Favorite in Rastatt, Baden-Würtenburg, Germany, built for Margravine Sibylla Augusta von Baden-Baden (1675-1733). Some of these terrines are still preserved there.
