Jean-Baptiste François SOLEIL (1798-1878) FRESNEL LENS in gilded brass and glass, engraved on the rim 'Francois Soleil, Const/r de Phares à Paris'. Second quarter of the 19th century. Lens diameter: 74 cm. H. 163 cm. ; L. 88 cm. In 1819, Jean-Baptiste François Soleil founded Soleil, based at 23, rue Vivienne in Paris, specializing in optical and precision instruments. In the 1820s, he was commissioned to carry out Augustin Fresnel's project, which would greatly improve the luminous range of lighthouses on the French and international coasts.
