Antoine-Jean DUCLAUX (Lyon, 1783 - 1868) Two Mamelukes and Horses in a Courtyard Signed lower right and dated 1820 On the back a label: M. Plantin Original canvas and stretcher 38 x 49 cm. According to tradition, this painting depicts the Mamluk Roustam looking after Vizir and Marengo, the Emperor's favourite horses. the Emperor's favorite horses, in the courtyard of a Bugey farm, on Napoleon I's return from his exile on the Vizir, preserved today in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris, does not bear the mark on the flank of the horse in the foreground. Acquired directly from the artist, it has since remained in the family of its current owner.
