Second edition, the first having appeared in 1745 at the equally fictitious address of Amsterdam, Chatelain. According to Tchemerzine, Anthony Shaftesbury "is the author of this book, but in reality Diderot did not merely translate it; he merely drew inspiration from the English work" entitled An Inquiry concerning virtue or merit to compose another.
