London, 1784. - POINSINET?]. Le Pot-pourri de Loth. Orné de figures et de musique. London, 1784. Together 2 works in one volume in-8, red morocco, triple fillet with corner fleurons, smooth spine nicely decorated with small irons, interior roulette, gilt edges (Period binding). I. Cohen, 475 / Dutel, A-725 / Pia, 956 // (51f.) including 24 plates /// II. Cohen, 948 / Dutel, A-1051 / Pia, 1405 // (1f.)-10-9 plates and 4 f. of music / (1f.)-10-9 plates and 6f. of music. Reunion of two fully engraved works, many of whose plates are free. The first is by Hugues d'Hancarville, a French antiquarian born in Nancy in 1719, who traveled Europe in search of fortune. In Naples, he came into contact with William Hamilton, the English ambassador, and produced works for him on Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities. His Monumens de la vie privé des douze Césars (Monuments of the Private Lives of the Twelve Caesars) are supposedly reproductions of ancient medals depicting Roman erotic scenes. They are, according to Cohen, completely invented by Hancarville. The second work is a reunion of two texts, the first attributed to Sedaine and the second to Poinsinet. They had been published by Cazin in 1781 in an in-16 format, and this edition is the larger-format copy. The plates from La Tentation depict Saint Antoine surrounded by tempting demons, and two of them show an intimately nude woman. The Potpourri plates illustrate the story of Lot, and three of them show him abusing his daughters. A very fine copy in contemporary red morocco.
