First edition forming volume V of the Poésies in the OEuvres complètes.
A very fine copy in a fine contemporary binding.
The spine is a little faded; there are a few very pale freckles and the last leaf of the publisher's announcements is missing, but the copy remains of very fine, fine quality.
Enclosed: HUGO. Le Rhin. Letters to a friend. Paris, H.L. Delloye, Garnier, 1842. 2 volumes in-8, green half calf, ornate smooth spines (Kleinhans). Vicaire, IV-298 /// I. (2f.)-XXX-(1f.)-368 / II. (2f.)-656. First edition. Copy incomplete of the 30-page preface. Kleinhans was a bookbinder in Paris between 1814 and 1855. Trautz worked for him. Spine faded, some leaves browned.
