First edition of the numerous woodcut illustrations in the text and the 17 plates outside the text in the second volume, by Gavarni, Victor Adam, Daumier, d'Aubigny, Émy, etc. The plate La Guinguette is bound here in the first volume. The first volume is by Paul de Kock and the second contains texts by Honoré de Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Frédéric Soulié, Eugène Briffault, Eugène de Mirecourt, Édouard Ourliac, Marc Fournier, L. Couailhac, Albert Cler, Charles Ballard and Charles de Villedot. A very important work, remarkable for the large number of Romantic writers and artists who contributed to it (Carteret). A fine copy, free of foxing. Spine a little faded with some scuffing.
