Jacques-Henri Bernardin de SAINT-PIERRE. Paul et Virginie. Paris, Curmer, 1838. In-8, green half-chagrin, gilt fillets on covers, spine with 4 ornate nerves, gilt edges (Period binding). Vicaire, VII-42 /// LVI-458-(7f.). Arguably the finest of the Romantic illustrations, containing 37 plates, including a map, 29 woodcuts on Chine monté, 7 portraits on steel, and 450 woodcuts in the text after Johannot, Meissonier, François, Huet... Copy at the rue Richelieu address with the young Bramine without star. The table of artists has been placed at the end. A fine copy, despite unavoidable foxing on some leaves.
