Gustave COQUIOT. Les Pantins de Paris... Paris, Auguste Blaizot, 1920. In-4, burgundy half-maroquin with corners, 4-nerved spine adorned with a mosaic of a character from an illustration in the text, gilt head, cover and spine (Trinckvel). Carteret, IV-123 /// (2f.)-160-(1f.). Satirical work that humorously and sometimes ferociously sketches various social circles: everyone is represented, financiers, politicians, academics, artists, merchants, bourgeois, nobles, gamblers, lawyers, opera dancers, girls and kept women... The illustrations are taken from various publications in which they had previously appeared. The book is lavishly illustrated with 134 sketches in the text by Jean-Louis Forain, including 4 in color, 14 in two or three shades, 4 in sanguine and the rest in black. Limited edition of 250 copies, this one of the 50 first copies on Japon containing a suite of illustrations printed on Chine. One plate is missing from the suite, but the work is enriched by a large original drawing by Forain in red chalk, unsigned, and a portrait of Forain signed by Steinlen. Some spotting to the suite.
