Jacques CANIVET (1714-1773) in Paris
Gilded, engraved and chased brass graphometer with pinnules, the round compass under glass with eight directions, the openwork board chased with foliate scrolls and volutes, signed 'Canivet à Paris' and 'A la Sphère', ball-and-socket base on a quadrangular wooden pedestal.
Circa 1750-1760.
Diam. 36 cm ; H. 41 cm.
Needle replaced.
Jacques Canivet, received his master's degree in 1743, was 'ingénieur du Roy' and a member of the Académie des Sciences. He was one of the most renowned manufacturers of precision instruments in the second half of the 18th century.
