Robert Bretell BATE (1782-1847) in London Brass Gregorian telescope, the cylinder sheathed in brown calfskin gilded with roulette at the ends, with its brass tripod and case. Circa 1830-40. L. cylinder: 64.5 cm. Wear, cracks to case. Robert Bretell Bate owned an optical and scientific goods store in London, which began trading in 1804. Trained as an optician, he produced the optical components (lenses, etc.) for his microscopes, telescopes, etc. From 1833, he was also one of the official opticians of the British Royal Household.
