Nevers Two rectangular earthenware plaques with polychrome decoration: one depicts the Derision of Christ, placed in the center, hands bound, holding a reed, crowned with a crown of thorns surrounded by a halo, three soldiers on the left and three putti on the right holding a shield adorned with the Instruments of the Passion, the other decorated with the haloed Virgin of Sorrows in the center, pierced by seven swords, surrounded by three putti and two angels, one holding the Instruments of the Passion. The scenes are depicted on a tiled floor in perspective, bordered by draperies in the background, with a yellow and orange border. Late 17th century. L. 30 cm x 24.5 cm. Chatellerault sale, November 10-11, 2002, no. 240 The seven swords symbolize Mary's Seven Sorrows linked to the life of Christ: Simeon's prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the infant Jesus in the Temple, the encounter on the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross and the burial.
