Albert SARRAUT. Important archive, mainly... - Lot 110 - Pescheteau-Badin
Albert SARRAUT. Important archive, mainly photographic, concerning Albert Sarraut. It contains more than 560 original photographs, the main themes of which are Indochina (179), China (46), the First World War (99) and Algeria (200), and is completed by about fifty miscellaneous documents (letters, maps and plans) relating to Indochina. Albert Sarraut (1872-1962) was a member of parliament and then a senator for the Aude region. He had a rich political career which saw him twice assume the position of Governor General of Indochina (1911-1914 and 1917-1919), before being appointed to head several successive ministries (Colonies, Navy and Interior in particular), until he was twice appointed President of the Council (1933 and 1936). As Governor General of Indochina, he distinguished himself by his liberal administration and thus ensured the respect and lasting friendship of the local kings and princes, in particular those of the emperors of Annam Khai Dinh and his son Bao Dai, as well as the kings of Laos and Cambodia. This interesting archive includes a large number of photographs in various formats (nearly 180) of Albert Sarraut's governorships in Indochina, depicting Indochinese landscapes, plantations, buildings, etc., as well as local and Western populations. In addition to a few portraits of Albert Sarraut himself, alone or in the exercise of his function, there are 14 photographs representing scenes of Tonkin in the 1910s (Motrang, Yen-Thé, Nha-Trang, etc.), 32 aerial photographs bearing the stamp of the French Airline Company (Saigon and Angkor Wat); 13 photographs of the "Photo Studio Saigon"; 11 photographs taken during a trip to Mytho; etc. The so-called "Indochinese" archive is completed by 43 maps and plans relating to Indochina (Tonkin, Cambodia, Laos) between the years 1915 and 1930, of which 38 are printed (among which 4 are enhanced or annotated by hand) and 5 are handwritten (of which 4 are on tracing paper); 6 interesting signed typescript letters addressed by the Emperor of Annam Khai Dinh to Albert Sarraut between 1919 and 1924, and 15 photographs of him and his son Bao Dai; 3 typescript letters from Preah Bat Sisowath, King of Cambodia (1920-1922); 2 letters from Sisavang Vong, King of Laos (1929 and 1932); 2 letters from Myngoon Min, Burmese prince (1920 and 1921). We will also note 44 photographs relating to China, and representing street scenes of Yunnan, popular festivals, portraits of peasants, prostitutes, etc. About 99 photographs represent portraits of Sarraut and other soldiers during the First World War, scenes of life in the trenches, military installations, armored trains, etc. Finally, this archive includes a significant collection of original photographs of a trip to Algeria (1927, 200 photographs) and the inauguration of the Transpyrénéen (1928).
