[VOLTAIRE]. History of Charles XII, King of Sweden. Basle, Christophe Revis (Rouen, Jore), 1731. 2 volumes in-12, brown granite calf, spines with 5 ornate nerves (Binding of the period). Bengesco, I-1257 / Lh., 611 /// I. IV-355-(1f.) / II. (2f.)-363-(1f.). First edition. Printing had begun in Paris towards the end of 1730, but was suspended by order of the Garde des Sceaux, despite having obtained approval and privilege, and the first part of the work was seized. Voltaire therefore chose to entrust the printing of his work to Jore in Rouen, one of those printers who do everything without permission. Copy complete with errata pages, some of which are missing. Small loss at the head; pale wetness in the inner corner of the second volume.
