Charles BAUDELAIRE. The Wrecks. Pièces condamnées - Galanter - Lot 90
Charles BAUDELAIRE. The Wrecks. Pièces condamnées - Galanteries - Epigraphes - Pièces diverses - Bouffonneries. Bruxelles, chez tous les libraires (Poulet-Malassis ?), 1866 (1874 ?). In-8, long-grained green morocco, 4 ribbed spine (period binding). Talvart, I-288 / Vicaire, I-348 /// (2f.)-163. Edition not described by Vicaire, but listed by Talvart, who believes it was published in 500 copies. The work has the etching frontispiece by Félicien Rops, here in three states, sanguine, first state and final state in black. This copy bears an ex-dono on the title page: Au poète Frémine / Souvenir cordial / (illegible signature). Charles Frémine (1841-1906) was a French journalist, poet and writer. He made a name for himself with poems inspired by his native Normandy, and was a member of the literary club Les Hydropathes. He was a friend of Rodin, Rollinat and Charles Cros, but was struck down by an incurable laryngeal disease, ending his life in 1906. Spine faded, hinges cracked and top cover missing; scattered foxing and small hole in last leaf.
