Mongie, 1822. 2 volumes in-12, green glazed calf, framed on the right with a gilt fillet and a cold roulette, spine with 5 ornate nerves (Period binding). Vicaire, I-452 /// I. (2f.)-III-232 / II. (2f.)-330. Very rare first edition of this work, which Stendhal considered to be without doubt his best book. It is a kind of scientific study of love and passion. Some 150 or 200 copies were printed, and it is rare to find it in a contemporary binding. Hinges unfortunately very rubbed, with 2 headpieces slightly missing; small 2 mm stain in the margin of 8 leaves and slight browning to one quire.
