STENDHAL. Rome, Naples and Florence. Paris, Delaunay, 1826. 2 volumes in an in-8 volume, blue glazed half-calf with corners, spine with 4 very nicely ornamented bands (period binding). Vicaire, I-452 /// I. (2f.)-304 / II. (2f.)-348. Third edition, largely original. It is the first in 2 volumes and contains numerous additions, new anecdotes... A fine copy bearing the autograph signature of Csse Guiccioli on a front flyleaf. Born in Ravenna in 1800, Thérèse Françoise Olympe Gamba Ghiselli was raised and educated in a convent, from which she left at the age of 16 to marry the 57-year-old Count Alexandre Guiccioli the following year. At 19, she became the mistress of Lord Byron, then in 1825 of the playwright Edward Fox, then again of the musician Hyppolite-Raymond Colet, and so on. Countess Guiccioli made headlines with her turbulent love life. She died in Florence in 1873 at the age of 73. Hole with loss of letters on one leaf of volume II and marginal tear on one leaf.
