Gilt-bronze Diane chasseresse cartel, decorated with children, the dial with Roman and Arabic numerals in a frame of openwork trellises, foliage, staples and flowers, with a later period inscription on the side of the cartel indicating a gift from the Queen [Marie Lesczinska] to M. Capperon her dental surgeon on May 2, 1749; (wear and restorations; notably a drapery above the figure of Diane is missing). The dial and movement (numbered 437) signed by Louis François Herbault in Paris, clockmaker received as master in 1743. Attributed to Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain. Louis XV period. H : 81 cm, W : 47 cm Provenance : Sale Paris, study Tajan, December 15, 1998, lot 101. A similar cartel signed by the watchmaker Jean Baptiste Baillon and marked with a crowned c is now in the Musée du Louvre. Another cartel bears a similar inscription relating to a gift from Queen Marie Lesczinska to the same Capperon (sale Paris, Sotheby's, October 16, 2007, lot 80).
