PAIR OF EARRINGS, each in 14-karat yellow gold, set with a r - Lot 75
PAIR OF EARRINGS, each in 14-karat yellow gold, set with a row of three half-pearls supporting a multi-lobed pendant motif surrounded by small gold beads, entirely decorated withcloisonné enamel on both sides with Japanese-inspired motifs, featuring a flying crane on one side and a teapot on a leafy background on the other. Designed for pierced ears. Work from the late 19th century. (Alterations and missing parts). Height: 5 cm Gross weight: 17.8 g The lot presented is neither signed nor hallmarked, but its style is reminiscent of the creations of the Alexis Falize firm and the enamels of Antoine Tard. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a plaque and a design sketch similar to this lot (inv. 1772:C-1869), while a vinegar bottle decorated with a similar crane motif is held by the Rijksmuseum (inv. BK-2009-50). For a comparable form, see K. Purcell, Falize, A Dynasty of Jewelers, p. 225. After beginning his career at Mellerio in 1833, Alexis Falize developed, starting in the 1860s, a body of work in which enamel played a significant role. His collaboration with Antoine Tard, particularly during the 1869 Exhibition of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs, helped establish the firm’s reputation in the revival of the decorative arts. Antoine Tard, who initially worked at Christofle, began adapting Japanese motifs and ancient Chinese cloisonné to enamel techniques applied to gold jewelry as early as 1868. He is today considered one of the great master enamelers of his time.
