SET of four “Papegaai” (trophies of the archers’ guild) in 800-part silver, one in vermeil, engraved with a coat of arms and the inscription “1662 / (?)P(?) LOMPRE "; another holding three medallions, one of which is engraved "Inauguration of the Portrait / presented / by the residents / of / Bondues / to the mayor / of their town / June 8, 1845," the reverse "Mr. Du Bosquiel of Bondues / Mayor / of Bondues / To his Constituents"; the second medallion engraved “Presiding at Cabus”; the third “donated by Bouviez, President of the Society of St. Sebastian / June 11 / 1810,” the reverse engraved with a figure of St. Sebastian; Southern Netherlands and Flanders, 19th century, Gross weight: 168 g INCLUDED is another metal papegaai. The term papegaai (literally “parrot” in Dutch) refers to the target bird used in pole-shooting competitions by the archers’ and crossbowmen’s guilds of the former Netherlands and Flanders. The trophy awarded to the winner (the guild king) often took the form of a silver bird to which commemorative medallions were added over the years.
